DENYS LASDUN    A PARADIGM OF THE MODERN MOVEMENT IN BRITAIN

EARLY WORK

32 NEWTON ROAD

Lasdun’s first independent work at 32 Newton Road, Paddington, was a house designed for an artist. No.32 does fit in, in terms of scale and size, if not blending in in terms of colours and materials. Like Goldfinger’s Willow Road, Hampstead, with which it is contemporary, it is not a white box, but is painted cream and has russet tiles.

And like other 1930s houses it takes the living space outside, onto an airy sunlit balcony, in tune with le Corbusier and even Lutyens’ sleeping balconies, rather than later conservatories which bring the garden into the house, or the garden rooms of today.
